In 1989, Eddie was written out of the show entirely. The official reason given was negative viewer reaction to Carla's being married, but in 2006, Thomas indicated that he was fired from Cheers for publicly insulting the physical attractiveness of Rhea Perlman, the actress who played Carla.

John Lithgow was originally chosen by Cheers producers for the role, but turned it down. Grammer believed that he had failed the audition because no one laughed, but was chosen because of the quality of his performance with Danson.

In February 1987, the creators decided to find a female lead replacement who did not resemble Shelley Long. During production of "I Do, Adieu," the producers developed ideas to separate Sam and Diane. Many ideas of writing out Diane were attempted, but they decided she would leave Boston for a writing career.
Rebecca finally falls for Sam after he saves her from Robin's scheme, and after three years of suppressed attraction the two have sex in the Cheers office, leaving it wrecked. Rebecca later confessed to Sam it was one of the most powerful moments in her life.
After many stressful times asking Diane to marry him, she finally agrees. At the end of the fifth season, when the two get to the altar, Sam tells Diane to go and fulfill her career as a writer instead of marrying him. Sam then sells the bar and leaves his friends, to sail around the world.

Visitors to Boston should really visit both Cheers locations. Both bars serve a full menu of food and drinks, and the word is that their veggie burger is one of the best things on the menu.
